Lao Bao Border Gate Switches to E-Visa QR Scanner: What Changed for Border Runs

October 8, 2026 at 08:30 AM 3 min read· Source: Quang Tri Border Guard & Lao Bao Dispatch
Lao Bao border gate (Vietnam–Laos border) introduced automated QR code scanners for electronic visas. Waiting times halved, but strict arrival date accuracy is now required.

The Border Guard Command of Quang Tri Province has completed upgrading the Lao Bao International Border Gate. E-Visa processing now runs through high-speed barcode and QR scanners.

Key Changes for Expats: 1. **Clearance Speed:** Officers no longer type visa numbers manually into immigration databases. A printed QR code scan takes under 30 seconds. 2. **Hardcopy Requirement:** A crisp, physical A4 printed paper copy of your E-Visa is strongly advised. Phone screens often produce glare in bright sunlight, sending travelers to the back of the manual queue. 3. **Strict Entry Corridor:** Automated turnstiles immediately flag entries if your border arrival timestamp is even 1 hour before the valid entry date on your visa (Hanoi GMT+7 time). 4. **Laos Visa on Arrival:** Unchanged — Lao VOA fees remain around $40 USD (or equivalent in Lao Kip / Vietnamese Dong).

Expats traveling from Da Nang and Hue are advised to take early departure minivans before 06:00 AM to cross in the earliest morning wave.
